A/N: For pressdbtwnpages in my own version of the fandom trope ficlet meme, with the prompt "Joe/Nick bunk snuggles." Thanks to chilisock for helping me out and assuring me this did not suck (I tried to make it longer for you but it just wasn't happening, sorry). Takes place during Nick's recent solo tour.
Nick wakes with a jolt to a warm, familiar weight on top of him. He rubs his eyes. “Joe?”
“Hi,” Joe says way too energetically for this time of night, although Nick guesses it’s not actually that late. He’s been going to sleep pretty early on this tour.
“What are you doing here?”
“Surprising you in your bunk, like I told you.”
“You said that was a joke,” Nick groans.
“It was,” Joe says, “but then it seemed like a good way to annoy you and not have to miss you at the same time, so here I am.”
This seems like typical Joe-logic and also like something his sleepy brain is having a hard time following. “Have you been on the bus this whole time?”
“Yep!” Joe sounds pleased with himself. “I saw your show, Nicky. You were great.”
“Thanks,” Nick says drily.
“Anyway, I was waiting for you to go to sleep so I could attack,” Joe says.
“You were… were you watching me?”
There’s a pause. Finally, Joe says, “Maybe.”
“Joe! That’s creepy!”
Nick barely makes out Joe waggling his eyebrows in response to this, his usual ‘I’ll show you creepy’ gesture.
“Not making it any less creepy.”
“I’m not creepy, I’m awesome,” Joe tells him. Somewhere in this conversation, he’s rolled over onto his side and is now looking down at Nick, his head propped up on his hand.
Nick sighs, and Joe says, “I’m going to take that as agreement,” and lies down the rest of the way, wrapping his arm around Nick and smushing his face into Nick’s neck.
Nick gives up.
“G’night,” Joe says into his neck, and Nick can’t help laugh a little, because it feels funny to have someone talk into your neck.
“Goodnight, Joe,” he says affectionately, closing his eyes again and snuggling in. The truth is, he’s missed his brother, too, and it’s nice having him here. Nick mostly pretends to be exasperated with Joe when he does things like attack him with snuggles, because really, someone needs to keep Joe in check, but he secretly kind of loves it.
He’s back asleep almost immediately.
When he wakes up, Joe is still curled around him. Nick checks his watch, cuddles into Joe, and closes his eyes again. They still have time.
