Ryan is sitting in front of the piano when Brendon comes in.
“Hey,” he says.
“Hi,” Ryan says, barely looking up.
“How long have you been taking piano lessons?” Brendon asks, shifting his weight in the doorway.
Ryan shrugs and says, without turning around, “A few weeks. Why?”
“Just wondering.” A long pause, and then, “That’s cool. Just, yeah, I didn’t realize.”
“Why does it matter? Since when am I accountable to you?” Ryan turns to look at Brendon, finally.
“It doesn’t. You’re not.” Brendon fidgets. Ryan just looks at him until he says, “Well, I just… why didn’t you just ask me to teach you?”
“Why would I do that?” Ryan looks at him like, What are you talking about?
“I know how to play. I could have been your teacher.”
“Brendon, you’re not a teacher at all.”
“That’s not the point.” Brendon pouts.
“… I’m not really sure.”
Ryan blinks. “Why are we having this conversation, again?”
There is a long pause while Brendon ponders this. Finally, Ryan says, “You’re jealous.”
“No, I’m not. Of what?”
“I don’t know, but this is how you get when you’re jealous.”
Brendon rolls his eyes. “Whatever you say.”
“You can teach me something if you want to,” Ryan offers, and Brendon strides forward to join him on the piano bench.
“I’m not a teacher, though.”
“You could be.”
“I guess.” Brendon runs his fingers over the keys experimentally. “Or we could just play something together.”
Ryan shrugs. “Whatever you want.”
“What do you know?”
“Not a lot, yet. I can play ‘Intermission.’”
“Go for it.”
Ryan starts to play, and after a few beats, Brendon improvises on the lower keys. At first, it sounds kind of odd, because it’s different from usual, but soon it just sounds good, Ryan’s melody meshing perfectly with Brendon’s harmony.
Brendon opens his mouth to say something, but then he realizes it would break the moment, so he just smiles instead and keeps playing.
