Ryan taps his pen against his knee for the fourth time, and Spencer looks up.
“Nothing,” Ryan mumbles, which means something is bothering him, and it probably has to do with the name of the tour, considering he’s been working on it all day.
“Ryan.” Spencer gives him a look, and Ryan says, “Something has to rhyme with ‘circus,’ right?”
This would probably be the point at which a normal person would repeat, “What?” but Spencer knows Ryan and knows better than to make fun of him when he’s in the midst of the creative process. So instead he says, “I guess so.”
“I’ve been trying all day, but so far, nothing.”
“We don’t have to call it a circus tour,” Spencer offers, at which Ryan gives him a look like, Are you a complete idiot?
“Of course we do,” he says. “That’s what it is. I’m going to keep working on this.”
“Okay.” Spencer goes back to his iPod.
Later, Ryan finds Brendon in the back of the bus.
“Hey, what’s up?” Brendon says.
“Does anything rhyme with ‘circus?’” Ryan asks.
Brendon blinks, looking on the verge of laughter. Finally, he says, “I have no idea. Have you checked a rhyme dictionary?”
“Those things are for people who can’t write without a crutch,” Ryan explains.
As usual when Ryan speaks, this doesn’t totally make sense to Brendon, but he lets it go. “Okay, man. Whatever you say.”
That evening, Ryan is in a foul mood.
“What’s wrong with him?” Jon stage-whispers to Spencer.
“He can’t find a rhyme,” Spencer stage-whispers back.
Ryan looks up. “I will. Just give me a little more time.”
Jon asks, “What are you trying to rhyme?”
Jon laughs. “Nothing rhymes with ‘circus.’”
“Shit.” Ryan looks dejected.
“I told him we don’t have to call it a circus tour –” Spencer starts.
“Yes, we do,” Ryan cuts in.
“Why does it have to rhyme?” Jon asks, and Ryan just gives him a look.
“It just does, all right?”
“Could we use a different word for circus?”
“Like what? We’re not calling it a freak show or anything like that.”
“Of course not. But you’re not going to find a rhyme for ‘circus.’”
“Well, that’s great. Maybe the tour just shouldn’t have a name. Bands do that sometimes, right?”
Jon and Spencer look at each other. Spencer shrugs as Jon says, “Not really, no.”
Without a word, Ryan gets up and leaves the room. He knows the others will probably think he’s going to sulk. It doesn’t make it any better that they’re right.
Ryan is in an almost-awake, partly-asleep haze the next morning when it comes to him. “Nothing Rhymes With Circus,” he whispers. “That’s it.”
He gets up and goes to tell the others.
